How it Works

At Oh Honey Silhouettes, each piece is thoughtfully handcrafted as a way to preserve the most fleeting, beautiful details of childhood. Our shop opens every 2–3 weeks with a rotating collection of custom heirloom offerings, from silhouettes to sketches and more, lovingly designed by our small team of artist-mothers.

We believe in doing things slowly, with care, and creating sentimental keepsakes that can be passed down for generations.

A Heartfelt Process

1. Stay Connected. We share upcoming collection launches through Instagram and our newsletter, offering sneak peeks and product previews that align with the season, motherhood, and moments that matter.

2. Limited-Time Drops. Our shop opens briefly with limited spots to ensure quality and care in every piece. Each drop is curated around our signature style: warm, feminine, and nostalgic and often includes seasonal treasures.

3. Submit Your Photo (Within 24 Hours). After ordering, you'll have 24 hours to send us your photo. This timeline helps us stay true to our process while ensuring your portrait reflects the magic you see in your little one. Please review our photo guidelines below on submitting your photo.

4. Hand-Drawn by Our Team of Moms. Every detail is drawn by hand by one of the three artists on our team with intention and gentleness. We capture everything from a tiny curl to the curve of a chin, treating each photo as if it were our own child.

5. Proof, Print & Ship. You'll receive a preview when applicable. Once approved, your piece is printed on carefully chosen materials and shipped with love from our Canadian studio, ready to become part of your family’s story.

How-Tos for Photos

Custom Photo Instructions

We can't wait to create magic for you. Our shop opens for custom artwork every 2–3 weeks with a rotating selection of products. Once you place your order, please submit your photo within 24 hours. This helps us stay on track with our design schedule and ensures every piece receives the attention it deserves.

To help you capture the best possible photo, we’ve included separate instructions for each product type below, including tips, before-and-after examples, and submission details.

Silhouette Instructions

Submit your photo within 24 hours of ordering. Silhouettes are created based on the photo you provide. The more accurately it reflects the final look you’d like, the better your piece will turn out.

How to Capture the Perfect Side Profile
  • Eye Level: Hold the camera so the subject’s ear is centered in the frame.
  • Straight Posture: The subject should face directly to the side — not turned slightly toward the camera.
  • Visible Features: You should clearly see one eye, both lips, and the shape of the forehead, nose, and chin. Avoid turning too far where the far eye or cheek becomes visible.
  • Neutral Expression: A calm or resting expression works best. Smiles don’t always translate well into silhouettes.
Hair & Accessories
  • Long Hair: If the subject has long hair, tie it up or back so it doesn’t bulk up the shape of the silhouette.
  • Fly-aways: Tidy up stray hairs or let us know if you'd like us to adjust them digitally.
  • Bows, Hats, and Accessories: You’ll be able to choose from a selection of optional accessories during checkout. These don’t need to be worn in the photo.
Tips By Age

For Newborns: Take a side profile photo while your baby is sleeping—on your chest, in a crib, or laid across your legs. Make sure their face is turned to the side.

For Toddlers: Keep their attention by playing a video at eye level or letting them look out a window. If needed, take a video and screenshot the best side profile frame.

Photo Setup Tips
  • Use natural light from a window or go outside. Avoid direct sunlight or harsh shadows.
  • Keep the camera at the same height as their face.
  • A plain background isn’t required — we only trace the subject.
  • Take a few shots to choose from and feel free to send extras via Instagram for feedback.

Petite Portraits & Sketch Instructions

These hand-drawn portraits are designed to feel soft, expressive, and a bit more detailed than our silhouettes. We work from full or partial face views, depending on what you send and what suits the style best.

Children & Adults

Recommended Angles

  • Straight on
  • Slight turn to the side
  • Full profile (for some styles)

Expression Neutral expressions work best. Smiles can be used if they really capture your subject's personality but avoid overly toothy or distorted expressions unless they are intentional.

Hair & Facial Features Please ensure you are happy with the subject’s hair, accessories, and overall expression. We draw exactly what we see and do not know what your loved one looks like beyond the photo provided.

Babies

Avoid taking photos with baby lying flat and looking up as this distorts facial features. Instead, sit them upright in a supportive chair or take the photo while they are being held upright.

Tips for Best Results

  • Camera should be eye level with baby.
  • Subject can be photographed straight on or slightly turned.
  • Use soft natural light and avoid harsh shadows.
  • Choose a calm or neutral expression.
